The eighty-seven works from the Karl Ströher collection, which was formerly housed in Darmstadt, form the core of the MMK’s collection. Acquired by the city of Frankfurt in 1981‒82, they were the determining factor in the founding of the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst. Most of these works were produced in the 1960s and come from American Pop Art and Minimalism. Included are selections of top-flight works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Donald Judd, Carl Andre, and Dan Flavin, as well as German artists of the period such as Joseph Beuys, Palermo, Reiner Ruthenbeck, and Franz Erhard Walther.
